Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the owner and grandson of the founder, could feel the world changing around him. Children were turning to video games, play patterns were shifting, and the LEGO® Group needed a new strategic direction. Yet the strategy workshops he attended felt flat and uninspired — a strange mismatch for a company built on imagination.

At the same time, two professors at IMD in Lausanne, Johan Roos and Bart Victor, were exploring new ways to help leaders think differently about strategy-making. Through the LEGO® Group’s long-standing relationship with the school, they began experimenting with something unusual: using LEGO® bricks instead of Post-its and whiteboards to explore strategies. Their early experiments were intriguing, but something essential was missing — a structured process based on a deeper understanding of how people learn, create meaning, and unlock new ideas.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ custom_padding_last_edited=”on|tablet” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” background_enable_color=”off” background_image=”http://impress.dk/amtdemosite/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/bottom_banner_blue-scaled.jpg” custom_padding=”60px|||||” custom_padding_tablet=”94px||||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”94px||||false|false” top_divider_style=”triangle” top_divider_color=”#FFFFFF” top_divider_height=”32px” top_divider_flip=”vertical” top_divider_arrangement=”above_content” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”4px||27px|||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_margin_phone=”|30px||30px|false|false” sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding_phone=”|30px|||false|false” sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_text module_class=”training-headline” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Arial||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”16px” header_font=”Geologica thin|700|||||||” header_text_align=”left” header_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_font_size=”34px” header_letter_spacing=”0.03em” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Building the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Method (1999–2004)

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=”#af1313″ divider_weight=”8px” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”RGBA(255,255,255,0)” width=”110px” module_alignment=”left” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text module_class=”training-text” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” global_colors_info=”{}”]

That missing piece arrived in 1999, when Robert Rasmussen, then head of product development for LEGO® Education, was asked by Kjeld Kirk to join the effort. In 2010, LEGO® decided to discontinue facilitator training. Many assumed this might be the end of LSP — but the opposite happened. By then, a passionate global community of practitioners had built their work around the method. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen and LEGO’s new CEO believed in its value and didn’t want to shut the door on those who relied on it.

Instead, LEGO® released the name and the original version 1.0 method under a Creative Commons License, making it freely available to anyone who wanted to use it.

Version 2.0 — the expanded methodology — remained outside the Creative Commons because it had been developed independently. Its intellectual property later became part of the Association of Master Trainers, founded by Robert and Per after LEGO® stepped back.

Since 2010, LEGO®’s involvement has been limited to producing specialized brick sets designed for LSP. They do not endorse facilitators, training programs, or partners. There are no LEGO®-appointed master trainers and no special status for any provider.

The title “Master Trainer” is historical, not official — Robert and Per are known as such because they had created and delivered the global training programs for a decade. A few others were trained as Trainers of Facilitators before 2010, but plans for a formal LEGO® Training Advisory Board never materialized after the company changed direction.
